Mozart´s third Concerto for horn, which we named the No.4. Why ? The No.1 D-major is a fragment only, never finished by Mozart himself.

Mozarts drittes Hornkonzert, das wir als no.4 bezeichnen. Warum ? No.1 in D-Dur ist ja nur ein Fragment, das Mozart nie fertiggestellt hat.

What is wrong here remains wrong in so many program notes. Nobody is checking about Leutgeb. His name is wrong, quotations are wrong, all is done without the proper care, just make a fool out of us horn players. 

His name was Joseph Leutgeb, born Oct.8th 1732, died Feb.27th, 1811. Nobody knows why the name Ignaz appeared. There is no evidence about it. And Mozart did not write "fool" or "ass" at critical points in the concertos. That is not true, as can be seen in my Mozart facsimile book. Mozart had used such terms only at the title of his 2nd concerto. There are some inscriptions on the D-major second Allegro (Rondeau) K.514, but a lot of self irony can be read from that.

Alfred Einstein & others stated that Mozarts concerto no.3 had not been composed for Leutgeb either, as because of its high musical demand. But all of them  have never seen the autograph seemingly, where Leutgeb´s name appears twice, written by Mozart himself. Or did they talk about the No. 4 concerto in our numbering, which originally was numbered as Third Concerto by the first publisher Johann Andre in Offenbach ?  But this concerto is mentioned in Mozarts own list as "ein Waldhornkonzert fuer den Leitgeb" (A horn Concert for Leitgeb). Leitgeb was another (Salzburg) spelling of Leutgeb, if one knows the dialect of my home country well. So what about Leutgeb. And the Quintet K.407 always has been called the "Leitgebische". 

Was hier falsch ist, bleibt auch in vielen Programm-notizen falsch. Niemand scheint sich echt um Leutgeb zu scheren. Der Name ist ebenso falsch wie die Zitate, alles ohne Sorgfalt, nur um uns Hornisten als Narren darzustellen.

Sein Name war Joseph Leutgeb, geb. am 8.Okt.1732, gest. am 27.Feb.1811. Niemand weiss, woher der Name Ignaz plötzlich kam. Es gibt keinerlei Nachweis dafür. Und Mozart schrieb niemals Esel oder Narr an kritischen Stellen seiner Konzerte. Das ist einfach nicht wahr, wie man in meinem Mozart Facsimile Buch sehen kann. Mozart verwendete diese Wörter nur im Titel des 2.Konzertes, K.417. Es gibt jede Menge von Einträgen im zweiten Allegro Satz in D-Dur (Rondeau) K.514, aber mit einem grossen Mass an Selbstironie, wie man beim Lesen verstehen wird.

Alfred Einstein und andere haben behauptet, das Konzert no.3 wäre wegen des hohen musikalischen Anspruchs nicht für Leutgeb komponiert. Aber anscheinend habe all diese Leute die originale Handschrift nie gesehen, wo Leutgebs Name zweimal von Mozarts Hand eingetragen ist. Oder meinten sie das heutige vierte Konzert, das zuerst als no.3 veröffentlicht wurde (Andre) ? Aber dieses Konzert wird doch in Mozarts eigenhändiger Werkliste als "ein Waldhornkonzert für den Leitgeb" aufgeführt. Leitgeb war nur eine andere Schreibweise von Leutgeb im Salzburgischen Dialekt. Wenn jemand die Mundart meiner Heimat gut spricht, weiss er das. Was ist also mit Leutgeb ? Und das Quintett K.407 wurde auch immer das "Leitgebische" genannt.
